    OVERVIEW

    The British Shorthair

The British Shorthair is a strong, solid cat with a broad chest, sturdy legs, a beautifully rounded face and a dense plush coat. They are best known for their calm, easygoing nature and make wonderful companions because they enjoy being part of family life without being overly demanding.

I have been breeding British Shorthairs in Perth for more than 20 years, and I still love their combination of beauty, strength and personality. The British Blue is the best known colour, but British Shorthairs come in a wide range of colours and patterns. At Cuddleton, I breed blue, black, chocolate, lilac, cinnamon, fawn, red, cream, tortie and bicolour British Shorthairs, while always keeping health, temperament and the breed standard at the centre of my breeding programme.

    PERSONALITY

    Temperament & character

British Shorthairs are known for their calm, easygoing temperament and wonderful character. They are excellent companion cats who enjoy being part of family life, often following you from room to room to see what you are doing. Most are affectionate without being demanding and are usually happiest sitting beside you rather than on your lap.

They also have an independent side and are usually quite happy to entertain themselves when needed. Every British Shorthair has their own personality, but as a breed they tend to be relaxed, adaptable and very good company, which makes them well suited to a wide range of homes and lifestyles.

    MAINTENANCE

    The British Shorthair
    coat

One of the things I love most about the British Shorthair is their dense, plush coat. Although they are shorthaired cats, their coat is very thick and does need regular grooming to keep it looking its best and help manage shedding.

    01
Weekly combing with a double length comb to remove loose hair and prevent matting.
    02
Wiping with a damp cloth during heavy shedding seasons (spring and autumn) can help manage loose fur.
    03
Regular checking and gentle cleaning of the eyes and ears with a damp cloth or tissue.
    04
Nail trimming every few weeks and regular dental check-ups to maintain overall health.

    Health considerations

    DNA Health Testing

    Heritable Disease Screening

Every cat coming into my breeding programme is DNA tested for the known heritable diseases relevant to British Shorthairs. This helps me make informed breeding decisions and reduce the risk of passing preventable genetic conditions to future kittens.

    Six Months Pet Insurance

Cover From the Day They Leave

Every Cuddleton kitten goes home with six months of Knose pet insurance. I encourage my owners to continue the cover after the free period so they have ongoing protection if their kitten becomes unwell or is injured.

    FIP Experience & Support

    Help When It Matters

I have experience helping owners through cases of FIP and understand how important it is to act quickly. I can help my owners access the medication and veterinary care needed, and support them throughout their cat’s treatment.
