Helping Your British Shorthair Kitten Settle In

Bringing your British Shorthair kitten home is exciting, but for your kitten it is also a very big change. They have left the home, people, cats and routines they know, travelled in the car and arrived somewhere completely unfamiliar.

When you first get home, place your kitten in a quiet room and let them come out of their carrier in their own time. It is best to use the room where their litter tray is set up so they know where it is from the beginning and can easily find their way back to it.

Let Your Kitten Come Out When They Are Ready

Some kittens will come straight out of the carrier and begin exploring. Others may stay inside for a while or quickly find somewhere to hide. Both are normal.

Don't tip your kitten out of the carrier or pull them from their hiding place. Give them time to watch what is happening and decide when they feel safe enough to come out. You can sit nearby and talk to them, but try not to overwhelm them with too much attention.

Even a confident Cuddleton kitten may feel unsure at first. They may move around the edges of the room where they feel less exposed or wait until everything is quiet before they begin exploring properly.

Start with One Quiet Room

It can be tempting to show your kitten the whole house as soon as they arrive, but starting with one room usually makes settling in much easier. It gives them a smaller space to learn and helps them quickly work out where their litter tray, bed and other familiar things are.

Once your kitten is moving around confidently and seems comfortable in that room, you can gradually allow them to explore more of the house. Make sure they can always find their way back to their original room while everything is still new.

Give Them a Few Days

Some British Shorthair kittens settle in almost immediately. Others may need a few days before they begin moving around freely and showing their usual personality.

Try not to compare your kitten with another cat you have owned or expect them to behave in a particular way on their first day. Every kitten is different. What matters is that they are given a safe, quiet place and enough time to adjust at their own pace.

Before long, your kitten will begin to recognise the people, sounds and routines in their new home. Once they feel secure, their confidence will grow and you will start to see the cheeky little Cuddleton personality you were expecting.
